Max Pettersson was a British scientist and systems thinker whose work explored one of evolution’s most intriguing puzzles: how matter, life, and society repeatedly organize themselves into forms of greater complexity. His best-known work, Complexity and Evolution, develops a quantitative framework for understanding this progression. Pettersson divides nature into a hierarchy of increasingly integrated entities, from physical structures through organisms and ultimately to human societies.
Pettersson’s distinctive contribution was to treat evolution not merely as a branching tree of species, but as a long ascent through successive levels of organization. Drawing on the concept of “integrative levels,” he argued that the emergence of each new level—organisms, families, societies and beyond—could be studied quantitatively, and proposed that the pace of evolutionary change itself has accelerated over time. His ideas attracted the attention of the eminent biochemist and historian of science Joseph Needham, who wrote the book’s foreword and praised Pettersson’s framework as opening new possibilities for studying the grand trajectory of complexity on Earth.
